About

Mount Rainier demands respect, not Instagram posts. The mountain sits there, 14,411 feet of glaciated volcanic rock, while day hikers plot their approach from Paradise or Sunrise. Most pick the Skyline Trail because it sounds manageable. They're wrong. Six miles becomes eight when you factor in the mandatory detour to Panorama Point, because leaving without seeing the Nisqually Glacier up close is like visiting Paris and skipping the Louvre.

The drinking starts before the hiking ends. Smart hikers pack a Nalgene full of something stronger than water for the summit moment. Whiskey works. So does gin if you're feeling fancy. The ritual matters more than the brand. You earned this drink by hauling yourself up 1,200 feet of elevation gain while tourists in flip-flops asked if you've seen any bears. The answer is always no, but the black bears are watching.

Back in Seattle, the post-hike drink becomes ceremony. Fremont Brewing if you want local. Canon if you want serious whiskey. The mountain is still there when you close your eyes. Your legs remind you where you've been. This is how good taste disguises itself as routine. You don't announce the achievement. You just order another round and let the quiet satisfaction settle in like sediment in a glass.

Fun fact

Mount Rainier's summit has been measured six different times since 1956, gaining and losing feet depending on glacial conditions and surveying technology.
