Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel opens with an actor dying on stage during King Lear, then jumps twenty years forward to a world where the Georgia Flu has killed 99% of humanity. The pandemic framework feels inevitable now, but Mandel published this in 2014. She wasn't predicting. She was paying attention to what systems actually look like when they break.

The novel follows a traveling symphony that performs Shakespeare and Beethoven for scattered settlements across the Great Lakes region. Their motto, painted on the lead caravan, reads "Survival is insufficient." This isn't disaster porn or zombie apocalypse wish fulfillment.
