About

September in Banff National Park means the tourists have fled and the locals reclaim their mountains. The weather turns mean without warning. Snow dusts the peaks while valley temperatures swing thirty degrees between dawn and noon. This is shoulder season, when Lake Louise sits empty except for the occasional photographer chasing light that only exists when summer dies.

The Fairmont Banff Springs drops rates by half but keeps the Rundle Bar open late. Locals emerge from summer hiding spots. Bartender recommendations matter now. Ask for anything with Forty Creek Barrel Select and watch them pour doubles without asking. The fireplace stays lit until closing. Outside, elk wander Banff Avenue like they own it, which they do.

Johnston Canyon empties by October. Ice forms in the lower falls while hikers still hit the upper reaches in trail runners and regret. The smart ones pack whiskey. Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye cuts through the cold better than any technical layer. Rangers find fewer rescue calls when flasks outnumber water bottles.

This is drinking season disguised as hiking season. The Drake Inn fills with locals who know October means real conversations and empty trails. Order Alberta Premium Cask Strength and watch the mountains turn white through windows that fog with your breath. Shoulder season rewards the committed and punishes the unprepared. The mountains don't care which category you choose.

Fun fact

Parks Canada stops plowing the Icefields Parkway beyond Lake Louise in October, effectively cutting Banff off from Jasper until spring thaw.
